AGO receives $10K grant for consumer protection
The American Bar Association’s Section of Antitrust Law has selected the CNMI Attorney General’s Office to be a participant in the prestigious Janet D. Steiger Fellowship Program.
This program will provide $5,000 to the AGO to hire a law student intern who will assist the Office with Consumer Protection activities during the Summer of 2006. The program is eight weeks long.
The CNMI, through a competitive application process, was one of only 14 jurisdictions selected to receive this Fellowship. The other States include: Illinois; Iowa; Mississippi; Montana; Nevada; Oregon; Pennsylvania; South Dakota; Texas; Utah; Vermont; Virginia; Washington State; and Wisconsin. The CNMI is the first territory to ever receive this prestigious Fellowship. In addition to the $5,000 grant, the student will receive a special CNMI travel stipend of up to $5,000 to cover travel expenses here.
Applications for this grant were already sent to each U.S. law school on Dec. 1, 2005. The deadline for interested students to submit applications is Feb. 6, 2006. Each State will be provided with a list of interested applicants from which to create a “short list” for interviews. Each AGO will ultimately select their own Steiger Fellow for their Office by mid-April 2006.
Law students from the CNMI are especially encouraged to apply for this excellent opportunity to experience consumer protection law. Steiger Fellow interns will assist the AGO Consumer Protection Section with mediating, investigating and researching issues involved in consumer complaints. The intern will assist with drafting consumer protection legislation, regulations and educational materials. Other responsibilities will include assistance with drafting complaints, discovery, motions and briefs in consumer protection and/or antitrust litigation. (PR)
