HAGATNA, Guam—Pacific Islanders in Communications, the non-profit organization seeking to raise the profile of Pacific Islanders in national broadcast programming, will be awarding scholarships of up to $5,000 to students pursuing college degrees in media and/or communications.

Applicants must be pursuing certificates or degrees in media and/or communications from accredited two-or four-year schools, colleges, or universities, or from other qualified institutions and programs. Individuals of Pacific Island ancestry are encouraged to apply, particularly the descendants of the indigenous peoples of Hawaii, Guam, American Samoa, the Northern Marianas and other Pacific Islands. The organization does not discriminate on the basis of race, color, gender, sexual orientation, religion, national or ethnic origin, or disability.

Applicants also must be at least 18 years old; a citizen, legal permanent resident or national of the United States or its territories; demonstrate academic proficiency or have experience in media or communications; and show a commitment to the Pacific Islander community. The non-recurring, non-renewable annual scholarships will be for up to $5,000 per student, per year. Deadline for applications is Friday, March 3, 2006, at 5pm.

According to Bank of Guam vice president PIC and Board member Jackie Marati, “In 2005, we exceeded our goals by having three students from Guam and the CNMI win $2,000 scholarships each. Angela Sablan at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas, is from Guam, while Sophia Suda and Tanya Oscar attend the Northern Marianas College. Our objective in 2006 is to continue to generate applications from our students in this area so that they get the academic and real work exposure to create relevant media for our region.”

Online applications and guidelines are available at www.piccom.org, or by contacting Gus Cobb-Adams at gcobb-adams@piccom.org, or by calling or writing Pacific Islanders in Communications at 1221 Kapi’olani Boulevard, Suite 6A-4, Honolulu, HI 96814, telephone (808)591-0059, fax (808)591-1114. (PR)
