Salas retires as DPS deputy commissioner
Juan S. Salas retired on Friday as deputy commissioner for operations at the Department of Public Safety, DPS Commissioner Santiago F. Tudela disclosed yesterday.
Tudela said Salas made the decision to retire shortly after the DPS ceremony last Wednesday in which eight retiring DPS personnel were honored for over 20 years of service in the department.
Tudela said Salas, who had been in the department for 24 years, was appointed deputy commissioner for operations last year.
The commissioner said he will not appoint an acting deputy commissioner for operations.
Tudela said the incoming Fitial administration will decide who will be Salas’ replacement.
Many personnel at DPS were surprised with Salas’ decision as he was even present during Wednesday’s ceremony honoring the retiring five police officers, a fire crew supervisor, and two civilians.
Salas used to be chief of the DPS Criminal Investigation Bureau. He was given a special assignment before he was tapped to be the deputy commissioner when then deputy commissioner for operations Santiago F. Tudela became the commissioner in Nov. 2004.
Many government personnel, including those from DPS, retired this month to take advantage of the 30 percent bonus that will no longer be provided starting next year.
