Superior Court Associate Judge Juan T. Lizama yesterday imposed a four-and-a-half month jail term on a man accused of beating up his girlfriend and assaulting her with a pair of scissors.

Following a plea agreement, Lizama sentenced the 34-year-old Liu Chang Da to a one-year jail term, all suspended except for four months and a half, for assault and battery.

Liu was given credit for the time since his arrest on July 23, 2005. He will be released from the Department of Corrections on Dec. 3, 2005.

Lizama placed the defendant on one year probation and required him to pay court and probation fees.

Liu was charged with assault and battery, and assault with a dangerous weapon. He and counsel Joaquin DLG. Torres signed a plea agreement with the government.

The defendant pleaded guilty to assault and battery. The remaining charge was dismissed as agreed by the parties in the case.

The agreement stated that on June 13, 2005, Liu punched, slapped and kicked his girlfriend.

Police said the victim suffered cuts, bruises and swelling to the head, chest, arms, shoulder and leg.

Liu allegedly beat up the victim in the presence of their three-year-old son.

Police said prior to the beating, Liu called the victim on the phone and asked her to meet him at the Real Life Restaurant.

When the victim hung up the cellphone, the defendant got mad and started breaking items in the restaurant by throwing the glasses and a bottle of wine. He damaged a TV set by kicking it.

Liu also shattered a window glass at 369 Noodle House, which is another restaurant. He proceeded to the victim’s house at 3am where he beat and attacked her, police said.

Later, the defendant apologized to his girlfriend and begged her not to call the police because he had a pending criminal case and may be deported.

Two days later, the defendant went to China.
From China, the defendant called the victim and asked her for forgiveness, when the victim learned that Liu arrived on Saipan on July 19, 2005, she immediately sought help from authorities, police said.
