Red Raiders take 11th Annual Turkey Bowl, 42-35
With time running out, quarterback Nick Gross engineered a game-winning drive that culminated with a 12-yard touchdown pass to receiver Robert Jordan for the game’s final score to put the Red Raiders into the record books as the champions of the 11th Annual Turkey Bowl held yestreday on the Garapan Elementary School gridiron.
The Raiders escaped with the win after falling behind 35-21 in the second half, but Gross and Robert Epley shared the passing duties to rally the troops and tie the game before Jordan’s late-game heroics.
The Green Gobblers almost wrote a different ending to the game as quarterback Sean Frink drove his team deep into the red zone before lofting a wounded duck toward Stanley Iakopo.
Luka Tapua’ialupe stepped up to make the defensive play of the game when he took to the air to intercept the pass at the goal line and brought it 60 yards the other way before being stopped near the 40 yard line
The pass-happy offense was in full swing as Gross completed deep balls and short yardage passes to Chris Nelson, Tapua’ialupe, Epley, Pistol, Jordan, Steve Coleman, Don Baetge, James Puckett, and Brad Ruszala in the win.
The Raiders and Gobblers jockeyed for position in the first half with each of the teams scoring three touchdowns. Gross hit a long score to Nelson while Frink answered on the next play when he took Nelson’s kick-off all the way down the field for the Gobbler’s second touchdown.
Frink shared time under center with Iakopo, James Pitts, and Roy Alexander, while Dale Roberts, Dick “Sure Hands” Bostrom, John Epley, David Banes, Bob O’Connor, and bruising Bruce Berline ran patterns and blocked blitzers.
