PIC: Showcase of CNMI history
The Pacific Islands Club will now welcome guests and visitors at its reception area with four panels of historic paintings and array of artifacts.
PIC general manager Kieran Daly said the project was made possible by the CNMI Museum of History and Culture. He said the concept was given the go-signal when they knew from the start that it would provide the hotel’s guests a glimpse of the history of the Commonwealth.
When guests would ask them about the paintings and the relics displayed in the reception area, PIC staff would gladly answer some of their questions and suggest them to pay a visit at the museum in Garapan.
The concept, said Daly, could be a tourist attraction opportunity as well. He said initial planning had an aquarium in mind instead of the photographs and artifacts. He said they decided to cancel it and give the new concept a try.
Museum curators Barbara Moir and Noel Quitugua led the setting up of the new display. They provided photos depicting Nuestra Senora Dela Concepcion’s 16th century journey to Saipan. Moir said jars, gold, and porcelains during that century were found on the shores of the CNMI.
She said when PIC management asked their help, the cause-worthy makeover was never a problem. “Also the support of the board of directors of the museum made it possible,” she said.
Moir said people around the CNMI are now hoping that there would be more cultural tourism areas on the island. She said the hotels should work on this concept more.
“This could be another marketing tool for them to better attract more tourists,” she said.
Daly said the museum photos and artifacts would remain in the hotel indefinitely. He said the hotel would even add a flat-panel screen TV at the reception counter area and would show DVD format videos about the culture and history of the Commonwealth.
