Capt. Lawrence Camacho, newly appointed chief of the Department of Public Safety’s Criminal Investigation Bureau, said he would not make immediate changes in the bureau just to crack unsolved murder cases on the island.

“What I intend to do is get with every sections [in the CIB] first. You’ve got to understand first the making of the bureau,” said Camacho when the Saipan Tribune asked him on how he intends to deal with the issue of rising unsolved homicide cases.

Camacho underscored the importance of checking on the personnel lineup and the availability of resources and listening to the recommendations of his staff before instituting improvements if needed.

“I’ve got to check and get the feel first before start implementing changes. I have to get the picture first before doing something,” said the captain who had spent 10 years in his 15-year police career in the DPS internal affairs.

Camacho said he would meet the officers from every section in the bureau and listen to their needs, problems, and suggestions.

DPS Commissioner Santiago F. Tudela appointed Camacho effective last Monday to replace Maj. Edward Manalili, who was given a new assignment.

The new CIB chief, however, emphasized that he did not ask for the position, but was only following order from the commissioner.(Ferdie de la Torre)
