Action was intense and even the unexpected downpour wasn’t able to cool it off as the inaugural Northern Youth Basketball Association Tournament resumed Tuesday night under the protective roof of the Gilbert C. Ada Gymnasium.

With parents and supporters cheering them on, Division I cagers from the Garapan Rollers I and Sugar King Shooting Stars did their best in hopes of giving their fans something to remember them by.

The Shooting Stars were trailing after the first half, 6-10, but were able to close the gap courtesy of free throws during halftime. Each player is given one free throw attempt during the break, with the Shooting Stars connecting on three shots and the G-Rollers on two shots for a 12-9 score in favor of the Garapan squad.

The Shooting Stars managed to work closer as Brandon Camacho nailed four jumpers, but at the end, it was the G-Rollers that pulled through for an exciting 30-25 victory.

Later in the evening, the G-Rollers II and Bwibwiis battled in Division II, with the G-crew coming away with a 68-32 victory. The team controlled the game from beginning to end, with Nate Mateo leading their campaign with 13 points.

Capping the night was an inter-organization upset as the G-Rollers II stunned the G-Rollers I in convincing fashion, 113-85.

With the G-Rollers I struggling to get into a rhythm, the G-II boys took advantage and closed the first half with a 30-point lead, 55-25.

G-I star Kevin Cequena scored 47 points, but his effort was no match for the teamwork of G-II, which played well down the stretch to hold on for the win.

Action continued yesterday as Capitol Hill’s Division III team made a solid debut with a 74-44 victory over Matansa Sparks I.

Capitol Hill went on a 22-8 run to start the second half to stretch their lead and cruise for the win.

Shortly after, the G-Rollers I rebounded from their loss by beating Matansa Sparks II, 77-64.

The team dominated the first half for a 47-28 lead at the break, but the Sparks refused to go down without a fight and closed the gap before falling a bit short.

In the third game of the day, the Sparks I bounced back from their loss earlier in the day to defeat the Bwibwiis, 47-42.

The Sparks held several double-digit leads but weren’t able to break the game wide open as the Bwibwiis kept fighting until the sound of the buzzer.

More games were scheduled to be played yesterday, but results were not available as of press time.
