The Saipan Golf Association is hoping for a November to remember as local duffers are invited to hit the fairways and the greens of the beautiful and challenging west course of the Laolao Bay Golf Resort this weekend during the December Ace of the Month qualifier.

According to SGA secretary Larry Guerrero, some of the island’s top players will be on hand this Sunday, Nov. 27, to vie for the low score and the SGA’s top-billing at the Bay.

Last month’s Ace went to veteran striker Joe Sablan, who battled fierce winds to emerge from a field of 27 strikers and slicers with a 43 on the front nine and a 45 on the back to finish with a gross score of 88 before taking advantage of a 23 handicap for a net score of 65.

Guerrero was hot on his tail with a net score of 70 on the day after his handicap adjusted his 47 on the front and 45 on the back 22 strokes. Guerrero also took home a secret stash of cash and a turkey, and while the duo dueled on the links, Tony Benevente Sr., Edward C. Sablan, and Luis Cepeda tied for third with identical net scores of 72.

All entrants are reminded to show up at least a half-hour before this weekend’s outing, which SGA organizers have set at 8am, with the first tee time at 8:30am. The two-round Ace of Aces Tournament gets started a week later on Saturday, Dec. 3. More details are yet to come, and more information about the SGA and its events is available by contacting Guerrero by calling 287-1052, or president Ben Aldan by calling 234-3176. (Brad E. Ruszala)
