The Northern Mariana Islands Volleyball Association is currently working relentlessly in fielding teams for next year’s Micronesian Games, with weekend tryouts ongoing.

The association held its second female tryouts on Saturday, with coach Nan Inthraluk expressing that he is happy with the efforts from the lady players.

“The last time we had 15 players show up, and now there are 18 players so I’m happy with the turnout,” he said.

Inthraluk worked on various fundamentals of the game with the players as he focused on the physical fitness of the player as well as the individual’s ability and skills.

“Some are out of shape but are the ones with the skills and ability, and the younger ones are in shape but still need to learn the skills,” he said.

Nonetheless, Inthraluk said he will continue to train the players before a cut will be made.

He said the first cut will result in only 15 players remaining. Three spots will also be added on to the number for players currently off-island, but added that when the players arrive, more training sessions will be held and the team will eventually comprise of only 12 players for the Games.

“Even though a player is cut, I still try to keep that player training so that she can develop,” he said. “We have a lot of work to do and I can see the potential of the team.”

Inthraluk explained that a problem may be commitment to practice after making the team.

“The big problem is after we cut,” he said. “Many of our players have responsibilities and they’re busy so it might be very hard to make practice, but there’s so much potential and if there’s time to practice, I know we’ll do very well.”
