Candidates have until Dec. 5 to remove all of their campaign materials from public places, according to the Commonwealth Election Commission.

Each candidate who fails to remove campaign posters within the deadline may be fined $500, as provided by the Election Reform Act of 2000.

“Most of the signs have been taken down already. But we can still see some posters along the road,” said CEC executive director Gregorio Sablan.

He clarified, however, that the regulations for campaign posters apply only to those erected in public lands. “Of course, people can leave signs on their property for as long as they please,” he said.

Each candidate who placed signboards on public land had paid a non-refundable, one-time fee of $100.

There were 105 candidates who ran for public office in this year’s general election, held on Nov. 5, 2005.

The winners in a number of races, including the gubernatorial race, will be known this afternoon when the Election Commission opens and tabulates election returns mailed by absentee voters.

Currently, the gubernatorial tandem of Benigno R. Fitial and Tim P. Villagomez is leading with 3,497 votes or 28 percent of the total votes cast.

Independent candidates Heinz S. Hofschneider and David Apatang rank second with 3,371 votes or about 27 percent, while GOP’s Gov. Juan N. Babauta and Diego T. Benavente have 3,228 votes or 26 percent.

Democratic Party’s Froilan C. Tenorio and Antonio Santos, who got 2,256 or 18 percent of the total votes, have already conceded to their opponents. (Agnes E. Donato)
