Local net minders are taking advantage of the holiday season as 51 up-and-coming tennis players take to the courts at American Memorial Park as the Calvo’s Insurance Junior Tennis Classic Tournament serves up another year of high-powered volleys in Garapan.

The five-division schedule gets underway this morning with a full slate of matches beginning at 8am, but the action continues all weekend as the race for the tiny titles runs clear through to Sunday, Nov. 13, when the champions take the courts in singles and doubles matches.

Nicolas Son and Ralph Buenaventura headlines a strong boys’ 18-and-under division field of eight experienced athletes, while younger brother Russell and Calvin Yang were awarded byes in the 15-player pack in the boys’ 14-and-under for their string of successes on the local scene.

The girls’ 14-and-under has its share of talent as well with standouts Vivian Lee, Audrey Motto, and Lila Mailman, but they have little time to settle in as Motto and Lee go head-to-head in their first matches at noon.

Joe Motto and Angelo and Rafael Jones will look to continue making names for themselves in the 14-player boys’ 10-and-under division, but they will have to wait until tomorrow as they have first round byes as well.

Thea Minor will also enjoy a pass in the opening round of the girls’ 10-and-under division as one of the top talents in the eight-member pack of pint-sized players.
