Nixon Gary Hartman, the detainee who recently escaped from custody but was arrested shortly after, was involved in various burglaries targeting high-profile victims, the Attorney General’s Office disclosed.

Among Hartman’s alleged victims were Eileen O. Pellegrino and Jacob I. Benavente, both of whom belong to prominent business and political families on Saipan.

CNMI chief prosecutor Jeffrey Moots said Hartman also victimized Robert John and Elizabeth George, whose vehicle was burglarized on Saipan last Nov. 6, a day after the elections. Moots said Hartman broke the window of the couple’s vehicle and stole sunglasses.

On the same day, Hartman allegedly burglarized Benavente’s vehicle and stole from it a baseball cap and assorted compact discs. Hartman allegedly attempted to burglarize a building occupied by Pellegrino on that day.

Hartman, a 24-year-old Capitol Hill resident, immediately fell into the hands of authorities, but he reportedly escaped from the Department of Corrections’ custody until patrolling policemen collared him on Beach Road near the site of the old Wendy’s restaurant Monday afternoon.

Moots charged Hartman before the Superior Court with two counts each of burglary and theft, and a count each of attempted burglary, criminal mischief and escape.
