NYBA tourney used to select all-stars for Guam tourney
The Northern Youth Basketball Association announced yesterday that it would use its upcoming cage tournament as a venue to select players and coaches to represent the association in the tournament to be held on Guam next month.
“The goal of this year’s first NYBA Tournament is to select All-Stars from Division I, Division II, and Division III along with select coaches to try and represent the NYBA in the upcoming Regional Cage Fest on Guam from Dec. 1 to 4 as they go head to head with former rivals Guam SYBA and teams from Palau, FSM, and other island nations in the Pacific,” NYBA said in a statement.
With that, preparations for NYBA’s inaugural tournament continues as the association will continue with its coaches and referees workshops this Friday, Nov. 11, at the Gilbert C. Ada Gymnasium.
The workshops, which were also held last Friday, will begin with the coaches segment from 8am to 12pm, and conclude with the volunteers and referees session from 1:30pm to 4pm.
The 2005 NYBA Tournament unfolds on Nov. 21 and concludes on Nov. 27. Deadline to register and submit the $100 entrance fee is next Wednesday, Nov. 16. Also required are age verification documents for each player on the roster.
“In order to have a smooth and organized tournament, the NYBA coordinators will not be accepting any other registration after this date, so hurry,” organizers said.
Teams from Garapan, Gualo Rai, China Town, Navy Hill, Puerto Rico, Capitol Hill, Kagman, Tanapag, Achugao, San Roque, As Matuis, and Marpi are welcome to the association’s inaugural competition.
The tournament consists of three divisions, with Division I featuring youths from nine to 12 years of age, Division II for kids 13 to 15 years of age; and Division III for cagers 16 to 19 years of age.
“The mission of NYBA is to provide our youth the courage to develop and create opportunities in their lives, to allow them to evaluate and make good decisions, and to have an alternative to negative behaviors and actions—through the game of basketball,” NYBA said.
