A warehouse man who was arrested Sunday on a burglary charge escaped from jail, but police immediately collared him Monday afternoon shortly after the Department of Corrections discovered his escape.

Corrections deputy director John Ayuyu identified the detainee as Nixon Hartmen, a 24-year-old Capitol Hill resident.

Ayuyu said Corrections officers discovered Hartmen missing at around 12:22pm Monday, when lunch meals were being served among detainees.

It remained unclear yet as to how Hartmen escaped, with Ayuyu saying yesterday that the matter was still being investigated. The Corrections Department issued no statement regarding possible negligence of any of its officers.

But Ayuyu said that his office immediately alerted the Department of Public Safety about the escape right after its discovery.

Patrolling police officers reportedly spotted Hartmen, who was in civilian attire, on Beach Road near site of the old Wendy’s restaurant and arrested the fugitive around 1:53pm.

Ayuyu said his office had already charged Hartmen with escape before the police department.
