B-n-S wins, Malat leads Caropinos
B-n-S managed to pull the right strings to survive their epic three-day battle against a determined Lagooners squad, winning the second set of o-kon yesterday as action in the 2005 World Organized Rocball High School League continued at the Marianas High School Gymnasium.
As reported earlier, the two teams were in a do-or-die situation after B-n-S, which trailed heading into o-kon, won the first set of overtime.
O-kon’s second set was a tight as the preceding sets as both teams continued to hustle on every play. The neck-and-neck battle was at 10-9 in favor of the Lagooners when B-n-S veteran Myron Laniyo stepped up to the challenge and nailed a clutch kee to lift his team to a 12-9 victory.
Laniyo led his team with 10 points after clobbering the ball for three aces and two kees, while Ichnis Typhoon Saito led the Lagooners and was the game’s heavy hitter with two aces, a xunk, and three kees for 12 points.
The two teams began their bout on Monday, finishing just a set and a half on the day. The Lagooners were ahead by a comfortable margin after easily cruising for a 16-5 first set win.
They led 10-7 in the second set when time expired Monday, and action resumed Tuesday with the Lagooners holding on for an 18-16 win courtesy of an ace by Gary Phillip. At that point, they led, 34-21, in the overall tally.
B-n-S clawed their way back with an 18-10 win in the third set, and trailed 39-44 heading into the final set of regulation.
With their backs against the wall, B-n-S won the fourth set challenge, with Kaleo Olaitiman sparking a strong charge with a goal. Charles Mesik followed with consecutive kees, and by the time B-n-S was done, they had forced o-kon with a 16-13 win.
The Lagooners still led after regulation, which meant they needed to win just one set to claim victory, while B-n-S had to win twice.
The Lagooners got off to a good start in overtime, taking a 4-0 lead on an ace by Graceful Fiden.
B-n-S managed to retaliate just in time to cool off their opponents and Jennifer Somol served up consecutive aces to highlight an 11-4 win.
Meanwhile, Malat and Caropinos played shortly after the B-n-S win.
Malat dominated the first set and cruised to an easy 17-1 win, and continued to take command with a 15-6 second set win for a 32-7 lead.
The Caropinos came back strong in the third set to cut the deficit with a 16-8 victory before time expired. They need to win today’s fourth set to force o-kon.
