Four checks unclaimed at the Scholarship Office
There are still four more checks that remain unclaimed at the Scholarship Office in Capitol Hill, according to board chair Margarita Tudela.
Tudela said the four checks are from the batch of more than 200 checks released late September to CNMI scholars, who are mostly students pursuing studies at the Northern Marianas College.
She said the remaining four checks are still with the Scholarship Office because the four students who applied for them have not returned the signed Memorandum of Agreement.
She said the MOA is a requirement for students and they have to completely fill out and sign the form in order for them to receive the checks. Scholars are required to sign an MOA with the CNMI Scholarship Office, requiring them to return to work in the CNMI within three months after the completion of their postsecondary education.
Tudela said the Scholarship Office would not release the checks until the students have signed the MOA.
She also clarified yesterday that the case of scholarship checks due some eight students—who have been claiming that their checks have been due for almost a month now—is not related to the CNMI Scholarship Office. She said the students who have been complaining about the delay are under the Saipan Higher Education Financial Assistance office.
The eight students are currently enrolled at the Northern Marianas College under the masters program of Framingham State College.
One of the eight students, Frank Demapan told the Saipan Tribune yesterday that SHEFA told them to wait for a letter that it has sent to each student with regards to their claims.
Demapan said SHEFA told them that what they need to know is written in the letter and they could make an appeal about it if they want to.
