The Cyclones beat the rain in time on Saturday morning to beat the Hurricanes 9-3 at the Kan Pacific Baseball Field in Marpi, as the SML Masters League continued to give some of Saipan’s senior players a season of their beloved sport.

The Cyclones (2-1) scored nine runs off of 15 hits as the ridgeline echoed with the pings of the metal bats for the third weekend in a row, but the final result also gave the Hurricanes their third loss in as many attempts.

A day after pitching the Department of Community and Cultural Affairs to the championship of the Inter-Government Slow-Pitch Softball League, Mel Sakisat picked up a complete game win when he took the mound for the Hurricanes on Saturday morning.

Sakisat allowed three runs off of six hits through seven innings while fanning four and walking two. The king of swing also did pretty well at the plate as he launched the third homerun of the season out of the park to tie the game at one apiece in the top of the first, and finished the day 2-for-3 with a single and a pair of runs batted in.

He wasn’t the only one wielding the big stick as shortstop Mike Muña was a perfect 3-for-3 with a pair of base knocks and an RBI double before he was plunked in the seventh.

After trailing 1-0 through three innings, the Hurricanes scored a pair of runs in each of the fourth, fifth, and sixth innings before the Cyclones answered with a pair of their own in the bottom of the six to make the score 6-3.

By that time it was too late as first baseman Tony Camacho doubled in Ben Dueñas and Sakisat before Manny Tenorio returned the favor to give the Hurricanes a total of three more insurance runs to end the game, 9-3.

The contest between the Tornadoes (1-1) and the undefeated Typhoon (2-0) was postponed due to inclement weather and will be rescheduled later in the season. The action continues this weekend as the teams march into the second round of play as the Tornadoes challenge the Cyclones and the Typhoon faces the Hurricanes.
