Legendary pitcher recognized for contributions
Legendary pitcher Antonio T. Benavente was recently lauded and recognized for his efforts in promoting goodwill in the game of baseball in the Northern Marianas after the field in Navy Hill was renamed in his honor.
Several government leaders were on hand at the venue when Gov. Juan N. Babauta signed into law House Bill 14-76, officially renaming the facility as the Antonio T. Benavente Baseball Field Friday afternoon.
“It is fitting to rename the Navy Hill Baseball Field to Antonio T. Benavente Baseball Field in order to recognize, honor, and appreciate Mr. Benavente’s untiring and outstanding contributions to the Little League Baseball and the people of the Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands,” Babauta said in a statement.
The local bill is now Saipan Local Law 14-29. The bill was transmitted to the Saipan and Northern Islands Legislative Delegation for action on July 7, 2005 and passed first and final reading on Sept. 15 before being signed in to law by Babauta.
Benavente is well known on the diamond and was among the feared pitchers in the game during his tenure. He has served as a coach in the Saipan Little League, and has been a member of several CNMI National baseball teams. He is currently seeing action in the SML Masters Baseball League as a member of the Typhoons.
