Ten-year-old Cub Scouts Ryan Baron, Crosby Schultz, and Harrison Baron had the fastest pinewood racing cars during the 2nd Annual Pinewood Derby held Wednesday night at the CNMI Mormons Church along Middle Road.

F. Matthew Smith hosted the event for the second time. A total of 12 Cub Scouts vied for the title of the fastest derby car won by Chris Barry last year. The 12 participants built their own racecars out of the pinewood. The participants uniquely designed their racers by carving and painting them.

The Cub Scouts started weighing in their pinewood racers starting at 7pm before the race began at 7:30pm. There were 29 races allotted during the derby.

Parents, relatives, and friends of the racers filled the church with screams and cheers during the event.

Smith said he was overwhelmed once more with the turnout of this year’s derby. He said the parents again had minimal assistance in building their racers. He said as much as possible they prevented parents from extending too much help in building the racing cars.

In the Pinewood Derby all racing cars that night had to pass certain inspection from the organizer to qualify for the race. He said the cars had to have a width not exceeding 2 3/4 inches and the length must not exceed seven inches. The weight is critical too. All cars must weigh only five ounces and below.

Other special awards were given to the best painting, best accessory, and best design. Parents who attended the event brought some potluck food.
