The Marianas Tourism Education Council, or MTEC, held its annual membership meeting at the Pacific Islands Club (Napu Room) on Sept. 29, 2005. Seven new board members were elected to serve on the Council, namely: Denice Shoemake (Donner Products), Dorry Gabutero (Aqua resort Club), Faith Dela Rosa (Grace Christian Academy), Andy Tidwell (Couture Marketing), Ed Cho (Saipan Grand Hotel), B.K. Park (Saipan World Resort), and Scott Norman (Calvary Christian Academy).

These new directors will join current board members Vicky Benavente (Marianas Visitors Authority), Jon Cramer (PIC Saipan), Yoichi Matsumura (PDI), Nhing Reyes (Ernst & Young), Larry Lee (Northern Marianas College), Marian Aldan-Pierce (Duty Free Shoppers), Ray Dela Cruz (Tinian Mayor’s Office), and Rita Sablan (Public School System) in fulfilling the mission of MTEC.

Also in attendance, representing the PSS MYWAVE Clubs was Judith Castro (G.T.C. MYWAVE Club Advisor), and MVA staff Jocelyn Pascua, Polly Deleon Guerrero, and Frank Tudela.

The Council board also elected its new officers for the upcoming year: Larry Lee (chair), Vicky Benavente (vice-chair), Denice Shoemake (secretary), and Nhing Reyes (treasurer).

The addition of these board members and officers brings great depth and breadth to the leadership of MTEC. The new chair expressed an enthusiastic welcome to all and thanked the new directors for agreeing to serve on the MTEC board. In addition, he encourage all of the Council members to look for other creative ways to get the youth of the islands excited about tourism and help them see the value of the industry to the islands, and also to spread the “Hafa Adai” hospitality spirit.

The Marianas Tourism Education Council’s mission is to foster and improve community understanding and support for the visitor industry; educate the public, especially students, about the value, social benefits and economic contributions made to the community by the tourism industry; and to instill, improve and promote the “hafa adai” hospitality spirit throughout the Northern Mariana Islands Community.
