The Saipan Mayor’s Office has proclaimed this coming Saturday as “Make-A-Difference Day” to help remember and rebuild the livelihood of hurricane victims in the U.S. mainland.

Saipan community organizations joined Mayor Juan B. Tudela yesterday during his proclamation signing held at his office in San Antonio.

Tudela said the “Make-A-Difference Day” is now on its fourth year and this time it will be for fellow Americans who are still suffering from the devastation of hurricanes Katrina and Rita.

“This year is very significant as we all stand ready to assist our less fortunate brothers and sisters in the United States,” he said.

The Mayor’s Office will hold a walkathon this Saturday to raise funds by means of pledges and donations from the community.

Tudela said the walkathon would start at the 6:30am from the Kilili Beach up to the intersection of Quartermaster Road along Beach Road. He said free T-shirts would be given to those who pledge or donate $10 and more.

Saipan and Northern Islands Municipal Council chair Gregorio V. Deleon Guerrero and secretary Antonia M. Tudela, United Methodist pastor Bud Carroll, Saipan Community Church’s Glenn Jenkins, and CNMI Power’s Corey Borja helped in the reading of the proclamation.

“USA Weekend Magazine and its affiliate newspapers, the Points of Light Foundation and its affiliate volunteer centers, and the people of Saipan, CNMI, have joined to promote an annual national day of doing good that celebrates and strengthens the spirit of volunteer service,” said the proclamation.

The proclamation said the office is saluting the number of volunteers in our community in the community who often risk their lives and leave behind their loved ones to assist the youths and the elderly in civic, recreational and religious activities.

“The present state of our economy is slowly winding down business activity and with the continued loss of revenues there is a need to cooperatively work together to make things look brighter,” it said.

Grace Christian Academy pastor Ferdie Guinto and students also attended the proclamation signing.
