October is water, soil conservation month
Gov. Juan N. Babauta yesterday signed two proclamations aimed at preserving the Commonwealth’s natural resources.
One of the declarations declared Oct. 17, 2005 as CNMI Arbor Day while the other called for the observance of Soil and Water Conservation Month this October.
Babauta urged all CNMI residents to support efforts to plant more trees and to protect trees throughout the year.
He also called on Commonwealth citizens to become more aware of the need to protect and conserve the island’ soil and water resources and to learn to use these resources in a sustainable basis.
“Designating October 2005 as the Soil and Water Conservation Month reminds us of our individual responsibility and important role in caring for the soil and water resources upon which our livelihood depends. Every business, industry, school, and citizen can make a difference when it comes to protecting our soil and water resources,” a portion of the proclamation read.
He said farmers and ranchers could help by applying pesticides and insecticides properly. Roads must also be designed and maintained properly to minimize erosion. Furthermore, a campaign against litter and other sources of pollution must continue.
