Vocational Rehabilitation Counselors from the Office of Vocational Rehabilitation will be dispatched to the islands of Rota and Tinian to conduct its regular monthly outreach services.

Rota residents who are disabled and interested in working and who would like to apply for vocational rehabilitation services are invited to meet with a VRC at the Rota Mayor’s Office on Oct. 19-20, anytime between 8am and 4:30pm. Tinian residents with disabilities are encouraged to see a VRC who will be stationed at the Tinian Health Center on Oct. 20, between the hours of 8am and 4:30pm.

In related news, Gov. Juan N. Babauta, in a proclamation signing ceremony on Oct. 3, declared the month of October 2005 as Disability Employment Awareness Month. This year’s national theme, as announced by U.S. Secretary of Labor Elaine L. Chao is “Workers with Disabilities: Ready for Tomorrow’s Jobs Today!” The theme is being used by the private sector, federal, state and local governments, and advocacy organizations for events and programs that aim to showcase the abilities and skills of job candidates with disabilities.

The effort to educate the American public about issues related to disability and employment began in 1945, when Congress enacted a law declaring the first week in October each year as “National Employ the Physically Handicapped Week.” In 1962, the word “physically” was removed to acknowledge the employment needs and contributions of individuals with all types of disabilities. In 1988, Congress expanded the week to a month and, changed the name to “National Disability Employment Awareness Month.” (PR)
