Heavy rains washed off some roads on Saipan, leaving debris that posed risk to motorists.

The Department of Public Safety, however, reported no major road accidents yesterday. Scattered heavy showers have been occurring on the island since Sunday until a brief sunny break yesterday.

The Emergency Management Office said debris blocked portions of roadways in San Vicente, Chalan Kiya, the Commonwealth Drive and the road leading to the Sugar King Park.

But the agency said that the Department of Public Works was conducting road-clearing work to remove the debris.

At 2pm, the EMO declared passable other areas that were earlier blocked by debris, including the Top Fashion area in Tanapag, the Dandan area near the Shell gas station, Middle Road across H-Mart to the Taro Sue area in Gualo Rai, a San Vicente road across the Nang Ocha Store, and As Mahetog area in front of Saipan Ice and Water Co.

The EMO said the tropical disturbance in the Northern Islands, which brought heavy rains on Saipan and Tinian, had already weakened.

It said high surf levels had gone down to non-hazardous levels, but maintained an advisory cautioning mariners, fishermen, divers, and other beachgoers of the possibility of moderate rip currents at sea.
