Comments sought on kids’ center project
The Library Friends is inviting the public to participate in a project that is intended to promote the preservation of the cultures, customs, family preservation, self-esteem, history, and society of the native people—Chamorro and Carolinian.
As part of the project, a Children’s Center, located at the Joeten/Kiyu Public Library, is under renovation to serve as a venue for the above activities, including the acquisition of print and non-print materials (videos, DVDs, CDs, etc.).
The group is inviting all public and private schools teachers, youth and community centers, related agencies and organizations, and individuals to:
* Recommend titles (print and non-print) for the project to consider purchasing to support the above listed activities. E-mail or call the project office at the Joeten-Kiyu Public Library for details on how to do this.
* Inform the project of other assistance needed to improve indigenous children’s social and academic skills including family centered activities to support these skills.
* Contact the project if you know someone or an organization that is developing print or non-print materials for indigenous children and families. The project is interested in supporting these efforts if funding is available.
E-mail (edrprojects@gmail.com), call (235-7322), or fax (235-7550) your comments and recommendations regarding this project to Children of Our Homeland project director Liz Rechebei, if possible, before Dec. 16, 2005.
The non-profit organization had received a federal grant from the Administration for Native Americans to conduct the three-year project. (PR)
