Camacho takes NMASA award
The Northern Marianas Amateur Sports Association recently recognized softball standout Tony Camacho as September’s Athlete of the Month after his nomination by Saipan Softball Association president Ray Palacios was unanimously approved by the heads of the local sporting organizations.
Camacho was last seen wielding his swat stick upon the fields of Tan Ge at the Oleai Sports Complex just more than two weeks ago in the championships of the Men’s Island-Wide Slow-Pitch Softball League when he led Verizon to the title.
The Sultan of Softball slugged seven homeruns in a tripleheader against the rival Flyers, but Camacho’s star shone the brightest in the opening 16-9 win to get the night started as the slugger went 4-for-4 with a double, three homeruns, and four runs batted in. Despite the loss in the second game, Camacho went 2-for-4 with a pair of singles and saved his best for the rubber match.
With all of the cards on the table, Camacho and company filleted the Flyers in 35-16 laugher in which he went 5-for-6 with an RBI single and four home runs. He finished the series with an amazing 11-14 with 12 runs batted in to take the unofficial nod as the championship’s most valuable player.
Palacios also listed Camacho’s accomplishments as the league’s regular season most valuable player as well as the leader in homeruns, runs batted in, and runs scored.
“He’s just a very scary batter. Once he’s up there facing the opposing team he’s just a fiercesome batter,” said Palacios.
Camacho was recognized as Athlete of the Month for September during NMASA’s regular monthly meeting last Thursday. The meeting also saw the Saipan Swim Club and the Northern Mariana Islands Tennis Association submit the names of Michael Stewart and Jeff Race as coaches for the 2006 Micronesian Games, according to president Michael White.
