SANTA RITA, Guam—The crew of USS City of Corpus Christi received its first Meritorious Unit Commendation during a ceremony at Polaris Point Oct. 3.

The Secretary of the Navy awards the Meritorious Unit Commendation to any unit of the Navy or Marine Corps that has distinguished itself under combat or non-combat conditions, by either valorous or meritorious achievement compared to other units performing similar service.

The award recognized the submarine’s service from August 2003 to September 2004, during which the crew conducted three operations. According to the citation signed by then-Chief of Naval Operations Adm. Vernon Clark, the crew displayed “exceptional tactical skill” during these operations as well as during an allied submarine exercise with the Australian Submarine Force.

“It’s been a challenging year for the crew, and I’m proud of the way that they’ve risen to the unique challenges of operating out of Guam,” said Cmdr. Marc Denno, commanding officer of the submarine. “The crew’s performances have been excellent; we couldn’t ask for anything more. We have our ups and downs, but we always make it through.”

USS City of Corpus Christi is a Los Angeles-class, fast-attack submarine homeported on Guam.
