Veteran Shane Yamada came through in the clutch, connecting for a goal in o-kon to lift defending champion Mwaliyas over a determined Caropino’s squad as action in the ongoing 2005 World Organized Rocball High School League continued Friday at the Marianas High School Gymnasium.

Mwaliyas dominated the match but weren’t able to close the bout after Caropino’s put up a furious comeback charge to win the fourth set, prevent Mwaliyas from juicing out, and force overtime.

With veteran Darrel Roligat bruising the ball with hard hits, Mwaliyas managed to control the bout and led 59-37 after regulation.

In Rocball rules, though, in order for the team leading the match to win, it must win the fourth and final set of regulation.

Caropino’s stopped Mwaliyas from doing so, but because they trailed heading into overtime, the team had to win two sets while Mwaliyas only had to win one set because they led.

Overtime sets are won by the team who scores 10 points first or knocks in a goal.

Instead of having to work hard and race to the 10-point mark, Mwaliyas took the quicker venue and was successful courtesy of Yamada.

The multi-sport athlete who also sees action in baseball smacked the ball past the Caropino defenders and into the goal to help the defending champions survive the scare.

Roligat finished as the game’s heavy hitter after having a hot day from the service line. The Chalan Lau Lau resident who also serves as president of the WOR was on target and drilled in five aces, two kees, and three goals for 20 points.
