Public Works Secretary John S. Reyes said yesterday that the department would tap into additional federal funds to implement hazard elimination measures on roads and highways from Garapan to Marpi, including the Thousand Curve in Sadog Tasi.

Last Saturday, a son of Superior Court Associate Judge Kenneth Govendo figured in a fatal road accident at the Thousand Curve, with his car falling into a several-feet-deep ravine. The curve requires motorists to make a hairpin turn, and the roadside has no fence separating it from the ravine.

Reyes said the department would secure additional funds from the federal Highway Administration to extend the hazard elimination project, which is currently being undertaken from San Antonio to Garapan. He said the federal government has allotted $10million for the current project.

“After we complete the first phase of this hazard elimination [project], we’ll continue,” Reyes said.

The project entails fencing of roadsides and changing road reflectors on areas that are determined to pose safety risks to motorists and the public.
