Parents Anonymous® to reach Tinian, Rota
Parenting challenges may soon be a little easier to juggle for parents on Tinian and Rota with the expansion of Parents Anonymous® Inc. to those islands through the Division of Youth Services.
Parents Anonymous® of the CNMI, which falls under DYS, has secured $10,000 additional funding to expand programming to the islands of Tinian and Rota in Fiscal Year 2006 through the formation of two adult support groups.
“Parents give and receive support from each other, and this creates a strong sense of community, belonging and trust,” said DYS Director Victor Mesta. “This additional sub-grant award will assist us greatly in accomplishing our goals by developing support groups in Tinian and Rota.”
Parents Anonymous® Inc. is the nation’s oldest child abuse prevention organization, dedicated to strengthening families and building caring communities that support salfe and nurturing homes for all children.
“Parents are effective and needed leaders who shape the direction of their families, programs and communities,” said DYS Parent Education Coordinator Felicidad Ogumoro. “This money is going to help us in our efforts to developing strong parent leaders on Tinian and Rota, who are key to strengthening families in those communities,”
The four guiding principles that form the foundation of Parents Anonymous® Inc. are meaningful parent leadership, effective mutual support, successful shared leadership, and long-term personal growth. The CNMI chapter supports these principles through activities including Parents Anonymous® support groups and Parent Leadership initiatives.
Although it is the responsibility of the CNMI chapter to provide funding to operate Parents Anonymous® programs, Parents Anonymous® Inc. has had the ability for several years to provide subgrants to support programs. The CNMI’s successful grant proposal was authored by Accountants Marlyne Igitol and Roselle Teregeyo of the Department of Community and Cultural Affairs.
The Saipan Parents Anonymous® support group meets every Friday. For more information, contact the DYS Parent Education Program at 670-664-2585 or parented@saipan.com. (PR)
