Headstart opens new Kagman center today
A new Headstart classroom in Kagman II that was completed this past spring and has been occupied since the beginning of this school year is going to have its grand opening today from 5pm to 7pm.
The center is the only Headstart classroom that has been built according to all the specifications and requirements of the Headstart Center Design Guide, put out by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services.
The center was designed by William Hofschneider with input from Headstart staff to make sure the center is built for the comfort and safety of small children.
The intent was to make the classroom as homelike as possible but also to make all the elements of the room built around the dimensions of children.
For instance, the windows are low so children can see outside, the doorknobs are low so they can work the doors safely, the counters and sinks are at their height so they can work on them and use them easily, and everything is designed with the child in mind.
The classroom is equipped with a one-way mirror so that parents can watch their child without being seen, ensuring that they can observe some authentic classroom behaviors and work.
The project was funded by a supplemental grant from the Department of Health and Human Services. (PR)
