Alleged burglary at Marpi shrine a hoax
Saipan Hoshoji Temple Association vice president Keith C. Ada yesterday refuted a burglary incident that supposedly happened Monday at the Marpi shrine and clarified that the construction materials that were allegedly stolen were in fact thrown away.
“That was a mistake,” Ada said, adding that the burglary report could probably have been caused by a miscommunication among the members of the group.
He said he called the Department of Public Safety and verified the case number and asked for the identity of the person who filed the case.
Ada said the materials were voluntarily thrown away because the wood and other materials were actually leftovers from previous construction work.
Media reports yesterday said that the Saipan Hoshoji Temple was burglarized in the middle of the afternoon last Monday when unidentified thieves stole construction materials from the shrine.
The report also said unidentified persons took 500-gallon water containers and two generators that were placed to light the area at night. Police had estimated the value of properties stolen to be around $10,400.
Ada said he would get to the bottom of the erroneous story and said he would call for a meeting to ascertain the identity of the person who filed the case with the police.
