Verizon shot down the Flyers in the Saipan Softball Association’s Island-Wide Slow-Pitch Softball League finals by out-slugging the aviators in the best-of-three series in last Monday night’s triple header led by all-star first baseman Tony Camacho’s hitting spree.

Camacho’s star shone the brightest in the opening 16-9 win to get the night started as the slugger went 4-for-4 with a double, three homeruns, and four runs batted in. Pitcher Nick Castro had a solid night on the mound, and contributed a sturdy 3-for-4 performance at the plate that yielded a pair of homeruns and three runs batted in.

Verizon stumbled in the second game by dropping an 11-10 decision as June Lizama singled in Mario Aguon for the game winner in the bottom of the seventh. Despite the loss, Camacho went 2-for-4 with a pair of singles and saved his best for the rubber match.

With all of the cards on the table, Camacho and company filleted the Flyers in 35-16 laugher in which he went 5-for-6 with an RBI single and four home runs. He finished the series with an amazing 11-14 with 12 runs batted in to take the unofficial nod as the championship’s most valuable player.

Camacho wasn’t the only one who generated the offense as the Verizon nine combined to smack 23 homeruns—including 11 in their 35-16 victory in the clincher. Castro also showed up with his whoopin’ stick as the veteran hit for the cycle and more amidst a flawless 6-for-6 outing at the plate that generated a pair of singles, a double, a triple, two homeruns, and five runs batted in.

All that waits for the top teams and top performers is the awards ceremony, but no date has been set by outgoing SSA president Robert A. Guerrero.

The SSA’s new commander-and-chief Ray Palacios will continue to plan for the future tomorrow evening as they formulate the process that will best prepare the CNMI for the women’s slow-pitch and men’s fast-pitch softball events in the upcoming 2006 Micronesian Games next summer.

The sages of softball will meet tomorrow night in the conference room of the Gilbert C. Ada Gymnasium at 6pm.
