The 2005 Micronesian Basketball Tournament has been pushed back due to the lack of response from other countries.

This according to Basketball Association of the Northern Mariana Islands president Mike Muna, who said during a recent interview that only two other countries—aside from the CNMI—had responded to the invitation to compete in the tournament, which was originally scheduled to be held from Nov. 20 to Nov. 26 on Saipan.

BANMI official Elias Rangamar confirmed yesterday that the tournament has been postponed and moved to January, citing that financial problems may be a key reason why other countries were not able to commit to playing in November.

The tournament is open to men’s and women’s teams from Guam, Saipan, Palau, Chuuk, Pohnpei, Marshall Islands, Kiribati, Nauru, and Kosrae. Players competing in the tournament must be under the age of 21 years.

Two men’s teams from Saipan are currently being assembled, with Rufino Aguon coaching the CNMI Junior Nationals and Joe Diaz heading the Rotary All Stars.

A total of 65 players playing in the 2005 Saipan Rotary Club Youth Basketball League were invited to take part in the Rotary All Stars tryouts, which began last Friday at the Gilbert C. Ada Gymnasium.

Meanwhile, Aguon had earlier indicated that the first try out session for his squad will be held today at the Northern Marianas College at 6pm. The tryouts are open to anyone under the age of 21 years and not playing in the Rotary league.
