A 43-year-old man whose wife was confined at the Commonwealth Health Center landed in jail after allegedly showing his private parts to a nurse at the hospital Wednesday night.

Superior Court Associate Judge David Wiseman yesterday imposed a $10,000-bail on Sylvan Atalig Pua, who was arrested pursuant to a warrant from the court. Wiseman appointed the Public Defender’s Office to represent Pua in the criminal proceeding.

Police have charged Pua with indecent exposure and disturbing the peace, accusing the defendant of displaying disrespectful conduct that interfered with the nurses’ normal performance of their duties.

In an affidavit submitted to court, police detective Juan M. Santos said the incident happened late Wednesday night, disclosing that the victim was the defendant’s wife’s attending nurse.

Santos’ affidavit alleged that Pua harassed the nurse, whom the defendant kept on calling. The victim told police that she feared that Pua might harm her, sensing that the defendant seemed intoxicated.

“While inside the room, she [the nurse] noticed [Pua] closing the door twice and from that time, she felt very uncomfortable, unsecured, scared and nervous,” the detective said.

Police said that the defendant suddenly grabbed the nurse’s hand when she was about to leave the patient’s room, with Pua allegedly telling her, “Come on, come on!”

Police said the nurse managed to leave the patient’s room, but Pua called her name while she was at the hallway. When she looked at Pua, the defendant allegedly exposed his private parts to her. Police said the victim reported the incident to her superiors.

The alleged harassment prompted another nurse and a security officer to escort the victim while performing her duties.
