A plea for help
I am a high school student at Saipan Southern High School. I have a disability and I believe I can speak for the 400 other Call-A-Ride users in saying we are harmed and upset by PDI’s decision to stop the Call-A-Ride service, which provides transportation for the island’s persons-with-disability community. The decision to end this program harms me and others like me, as we need this service for transportation.
The ending of this transportation method make life harder for all the people with disabilities that are now unable to get around the island, as Call-A-Ride was their only way to get around. We need this service for such everyday activities as going to the hospital, going to school, getting to our jobs, and other common everyday needs.
I am calling upon the governor and the Legislature, and even the private business community, to help us find an affordable way to get around the island. I would like to see the government apply the same effort and concern in replacing the Call-A-Ride program as is being used to retain the garment factories, keep or replace JAL Airlines, as well as other government interventions in private businesses.
I urge everyone to imagine facing the challenges that a person with disability faces, and by doing so, I am sure you will feel the same way I do about this issue.
