After receiving the notification that the CNMI will officially host the 2006 Micronesian Games next summer, many local sporting associations have begun their search for the crème de la crème for the regional event, and the organizers of the Northern Mariana Islands Triathlon Federation recently announced a portion of their process for selection.

According to Sue Knecht, the NMITF will begin the qualifying races with the upcoming Rota Blue Triathlon on Saturday, Nov. 19, and all triathletes interested in representing the Commonwealth on its home turf need to compete in event.

Typically the team is decided by the outcome of three races, with the selected team consisting of the top three male and female athletes who garner the best combined times.

While the other qualifying races are yet to be named, it seems likely to expect the Tinian Turquoise Blue Triathlon next February and April’s Tagaman Triathlon on Saipan.

In addition to consistently finishing atop the standings, qualifiers for the 2006 Micro Games must have lived in the CNMI for five years.

The KFC Triathlon Club will be hosting the Rota Blue Olympic Distance Triathlon in association with the MVA, and the course includes a 1.5K ocean swim that local officials call amazing, followed by a 40km rolling hills bike ride, and a 10km run. In the past there has been a Half Iron Man distance race as well, but currently the status of the extra distance endurance race is unclear.

The fee for the Rota Blue Triathlon is $80, and registration is possible through Onishi-san at KFC triathlon via email to kfc-onishi@gem.hi-ho-ne.jp. For more information about the race, contact Frank Tudela at the MVA by calling 664-3210 or visit http://www.gem.hi-ho.ne.jp/kfc-onishi%20/.
