Fejeran is September bowling queen
Sophie Fejeran brought her A game to the Capitol Bowling Center Sunday night and went on to be crowned champion of the September Pepsi Queen of the Lanes Tenpin Bowling Tournament.
Fejeran, who bowls simply for fun and relaxation, took the night off on Monday after knocking down a respectable 717 pins Sunday night. She was at the venue Monday night but did not bowl. Instead, she waited for other competitors to complete their games and for officials to announce her name as champion.
“I just played my game and tried my luck,” Fejeran said during an interview. “I love bowling. I’ve been bowling for maybe 10 years and it’s something that keeps me relaxed.”
Fejeran’s journey to claiming her first Queen of the Lanes title kicked off on a high note. The Women’s Affairs Office employee sizzled in her first game as she left her mark on 224 pins—the highest score for a game in the two-day tourney.
Fejeran cooled off but still put up a decent show in her second game by knocking down 171 pins. After a pedestrian 149 in her third game, she managed to recover and close with a 173 for an average of 179.25 pins per game.
“It’s really unexpected,” she said. “I don’t consider myself a good bowler and there are lots of good bowlers so I guess it was just my luck.”
Finishing a far second was Ron Cal, who Sunday night score of 660 enabled her to finish just three pins ahead of Emi Williams.
Cal closed with a fury as she improved her chances of finishing in the top half of the charts by bruising 214 pins in her fourth game. She had earlier bowled 152, 144, and 150 for an average of 165 pins per game.
Williams finished with 657 pins, knocking down 159 in the first game, 192 in her second game, 135 in the third, and 171 in the fourth Monday night.
Elena Soll and Vicky Santos placed fourth and fifth with 652 and 648 pins.
Lala Taitano (647), Lynn Teregeyo (644), Williams (643), Rizza Hensley (636), and Soll (633) also posted top 10 performances. Williams and Soll bowled on both nights.
With the win, Fejeran walked away with a shiny trophy and $50. Cal took home $35, Williams $20, and Soll $15.
The September Pepsi Queen of the Lanes Tournament drew a total of 19 entries. The monthly bowling competition is sponsored by Pacific Trading Co. and culminates with a season-ending championship tournament at the end of the season.
