NMIFA changes evaluation schedule
After signing up more than 200 players, hosting clinics with professional coaches from Guam, and bringing new life to an otherwise locally unappreciated sport, the Northern Marianas Islands Football (Soccer) Association will be holding player evaluations for the team selections.
Rather than have the kids runs drills this weekend in front of a scouting committee, the NMIFA members will be waiting until next Saturday, Sept. 24, to choose the teams for the upcoming season at American Memorial Park.
According to board secretary Peter Coleman, the day to day development of the local soccer club has progressed as scheduled and the long-awaited equipment is currently on the way.
In addition to the gear, Coleman said that local participation from the parents of NMIFA players has stepped up a notch as well.
“We just acquired a coach/league coordinator and have had several other parent volunteers for coaching positions.
As with any new league, NMIFA need a number of volunteers to help out with almost every aspect, including parents for coaching and officiating. While individuals with a background in the sport are encouraged to pass on their knowledge, training will provided and no experience is necessary.
There is good news from the financial circles as well. Though it is not yet complete, the list of community sponsors is growing daily. In addition to the agreement with Joeten, Coleman sounded excited about the response from local businesses about sponsoring individual teams. While names of contributors will eventually be released, Coleman said that businesses are interested in paying $300 to have their logo emblazoned on their team’s uniforms.
