Powerhouse Poohdeni lived up to expectations and ran roughshod over Subway-Coca Cola, while 287 Club-Verizon staged a late rally to stun Cavite-Country House in Sunday’s 2005 MDX Amateur Radio Club Inter-Color Basketball League at the Gilbert C. Ada Gymnasium.

Poohdeni brought its A game and quickly showcased its dominance by controlling the first quarter. Guard Lester Babauta was at the forefront of the early attack, knocking down two triples and finishing with 10 points as Poohdeni took a 32-15 lead.

The lead ballooned in the second quarter as Poohdeni continued its furious attack, adding another 24 points to its corner, but what was more impressive was that the team also limited Subway to just 11 points. With the impressive show on both ends of the court, Poohdeni headed into the break ahead with a comfortable lead, 56-26.

The Subway cagers managed to break out of their scoring slump at the start of the second half, but their efforts were outclassed as Poohdeni kept their engine running on high gear and lit up the portable scoreboard for 39 points with a balanced attack that featured 10 players scoring at least two points. Poohdeni pretty much sealed the game at the end of the period as the team already posted a 43-point cushion, 95-52.

Poohdeni’s roster depth was just too much for Subway, which was not able to threaten the lead in the fourth.

In all, eight Poohdeni cagers finished in double figures, with Bing Marasigan leading the way with 17 markers. Playmaker Fando Muleta and center Jawn Joyner added 16 and 15 points, while Babauta finished with 13 points. Mike Umali, Danny Bicera, and Emil De Belen each had 11 points, while Rey Uy had 10 points.

Gil Gapor led Subway with 18 points, while Edwin Soriano and Darius Salvani contributed 15 and 14 points. Jojo Guinto and Mike Achas also chipped in 11 and 10 points.

In the second game, muscle man Roland Delos Reyes, recently arrived Randy Arnedo, and the rest of their 287 Club crew performed well down the stretch to turn a nine-point deficit into a 93-90 victory.

Cavite started the game like a house on fire and had double-digit leads after the first two periods courtesy of the offensive play of forwards William Opone and Errol Peredo.

Cavite was still on top as the game was heading to the fourth, 71-62, but the tables turned as the team—plagued with foul trouble—saw its offensive charge slow down to a crawl.

Delos Reyes, who played a key role in keeping 287 Club within striking distance, then took over and swooshed 12 points in the final 10 minutes of play, while Arnedo, who was held to just a point in the first three quarters, came alive with 11 points to swing favor back to their team.

Delos Reyes topped all scorers with 34 points to lead 287 Club, while Darwin Barbo and Arnedo finished with 13 and 12 points. Veteran Sonny Ranola also added 10 points.

Opone and Peredo led Cavite with 29 and 26 points, while guard Chris Domingo contributed 11 points.
