Northern Marianas College president Tony V. Deleon Guerrero last week was awarded an honorary doctoral degree by Japan’s prestigious Soka University.

Guerrero received the honor from the Board of Trustees of Soka University.

Soka University president Masami Wakae said the decision to confer the honorary degree on Guerrero was made upon the strong recommendation of Dr. Daisaku Ikeda, the founder of the university. Wakae presented the certificate to Guerrero last week in Japan.

In his letter to Guerrero in July, Wakae said that Soka University is also thankful to NMC after the CNMI’s lone tertiary institution conferred on Ikeda an honorary professorial title in 2001 and the title of an honorary president in January this year.

Guerrero said he received the recognition with immense gratitude and joy.

“This award will be most valuable to Northern Marianas College as a whole, for it brings distinction and tribute to the institution itself and the role it plays in promoting education, culture, and peace within this region of the world,” Guerrero said in his letter to Wakae last month.

He added that the award signifies an even closer relationship between the leaders of both centers of learning and enlightenment.

Soka University is considered one of the largest educational institutions in the Soka prefecture. The university established the Soka Law School in 2004 to foster legal experts dedicated to the welfare of people based on humanitarianism.
