Samahang Ilokano at Pangasinense put up another balanced attack to edge SMF-Shell-Seabridge, 113-104, as action in the 2005 MDX Amateur Radio Club Basketball League resumed Saturday night at the Gilbert C. Ada Gymnasium.

SMF hung tough courtesy of the play of Leo Itaas and Gary Cayetano, but the one-two punch did not have enough ammo to outgun SIP.

Itaas was itching to get back on the court and showed it in the early goings as he drilled in five field goals and hit all four free throw attempts for 14 points in the opening period, helping SMF get off on the right foot with a 21-17 lead.

The tightly fought bout carried over the second quarter as SIP inched closer prevented SMF from building on the lead. SIP outscored their opponents, 29-25, in the period and at halftime, the game was all knotted up at 46-46.

SIP carried their momentum to the second half and while the team was beginning to work its magic, SMF was trying to keep in striking distance.

Down by five and their backs against the wall at the start of the payoff stanza, Itaas, Cayetano, and company put up a desperate charge, but their efforts came to no avail as SIP didn’t lose a beat and hit turbo mode for a whopping 40 points to close out on top.

Leo Factor and Rick Alegre led SIP with 30 and 17 points, while fellow veterans Robert Tamondong and Junar Guiab contributed 13 points apiece. Guard Jester Garcia also finished with 11 points.

Itaas led SMF with a game-high 33 points, while Cayetano finished with 31 points, 21 of them coming from long distance.

Meanwhile, the second game featuring JCN Enterprises and Micronesian Brokers, Inc. was postponed after the scoreboard began to malfunction.

SMF-Seabridge 104—Itaas 33, Cayetano 31, Sison 10, Moises 8, Banatasa 6, Badilles 4, Demigillo 3, Arcanghel 2.
