Micro Games hosting tops week’s news
The CNMI was awarded the hosting of the 2006 Micronesian Games over the past week, which gave the local sports scene a boost after majority of action was postponed.
Local officials agreed that now comes the hard part as the Commonwealth will now have to secure funds that will be used to renovate and construct facilities that will play host to about 1,500 athletes, coaches, and officials from around the region.
Officials will also have to form an organizing committee for the various tasks that would need to be done in preparation for and during the Games.
Meanwhile, Tinian resident Frank Diaz secured the 3rd Annual Tinian Mayor’s Perpetual Cup last Saturday morning at the Coral Ocean Point Golf Resort.
Mark Moss and Eddie Peter placed second and third.
Aside from the first place trophy, Diaz also received $500 in cash for the low net, while Moss walked away with $400, Peter pocketed $300, and Frank Castro and Tony Satur each took home $100 for placing fourth and fifth, respectively.
Lady netter Kana Aikawa also grabbed some attention after being named to the ITA Scholar-Athlete team along with four other tennis players matriculating at the University of Hawaii in Manoa.
Aikawa and company also named to the Academic All-Western Athletic Conference team and recognized as UH Scholar-Athlete.
The Fil-Taga and Saipan golfers associations also joined hands last Sunday, taking part in a Ryder Cup-like tournament with the goal of helping raise funds for the Junior Golfers League.
The two-day tournament concludes today at the Kingfisher Golf Links, with tee time set for 10:30am.
Thirty-eight well-dressed multisport enthusiasts braved the wind and rain from Susupe to Garapan Monday morning during the Try Wayne Tri II.
The first overall finisher was Richard Sikkel, who crossed the finish line in 1:14:32 without not winning a single leg of the race, followed by Chris Fryling in second (1:18:40), and Florian Bragg in third (1:22:40).
Also, the Saipan Major League Baseball championship series resumed yesterday, as did the 2005 MDX Amateur radio Inter-color Basketball League. The Saipan Rotary Summer Youth Basketball League and the 2005 Budweiser Cup BANMI Men’s Island-wide Basketball League both resume tomorrow.
