CNMI bowlers to put skills to the test
The CNMI will be well represented in what is expected to be another competitive scene at the 19th Asian Inter-City Bowling Championships next week in Jakarta, Indonesia.
Two CNMI teams will see action in the competition, with both consisting of four players.
Shouldering Team Saipan’s charge will be veterans Joseph Sablan, John Santos, Simon Manacop, and Mark “The Shark” Halstead, while Kitz Barja joins youth bowlers Raymond Zapanta, Raymond Angelles, and Ruselle Zapanta in Team Capitol Hill.
The team will also be accompanied by head of delegation and SBA president Jerry Tan, as well as manager and coach Ross Zapanta.
The bowlers will compete in three events—singles, doubles, and team—and the scores in the three events will determine whether they qualify for the all-events medal.
The top 16 bowlers in the all-events secure slots in the two-day Masters Event.
The team is scheduled to make their journey to Jakarta this Saturday. The annual tournament kicks off on Aug. 29 and will conclude on Sept. 4.
Expected to give the CNMI teams a run for their money are Guam, Hong Kong, India, Korea, Macau, Malaysia, the Philippines, and host Indonesia.
Other member cities from Australia, New Zealand, and Taiwan may also be represented at the competition.
The tournament is officially sanctioned by the International Bowling Federation, the World Tenpin Bowling Association, and the Asian Bowling Federation—the worldwide governing bodies of tenpin bowling.
Updates of the tournament are available at the ABF website www.abf-online.org.
Also, the SBA expressed its appreciation to Tan Holdings Corp. and Jerry Tan for providing uniforms and a $1,000 donation which shouldered part of the cost of the trip.
