First of all, I would like to thank the Office of Vocational Rehabilitation for allowing me the opportunity to be a part of this team for the past six weeks. This summer, I’ve learned many things about this program that I would never have known if I were not given the chance.

At first, I was not too familiar with the role of this agency. However, after working with a great and wonderful staff and attending many different meetings, I learned about the many services and support systems that are available for individuals with disabilities. It is also evident that OVR must work in collaboration with other agencies and vendors such as the Social Security Office, Community Guidance Center, Northern Marianas Protection & Advocacy Systems, Inc., etc. in order to truly assist people and meet their needs.

During this past summer, OVR has given me the chance to take off-island trips, which were very exciting. Not only did I meet new people on Tinian and Rota, I was able to see that OVR makes sure that it provides services to all qualified individuals with disabilities throughout the CNMI. This gave me the chance to see how the counselors work with their consumers and it also gave me the opportunity to assist them with new referrals. The statewide conference in Milwaukee was also exciting. Although the flight was long and tiring, the conference itself was interesting. The sessions I attended taught me a great deal about disabilities in general and that accommodating individual needs is very important. The whole idea of participating in a statewide conference—for the first time—was a learning experience, and I am grateful to have been a part of that.

I am glad to have met and worked with a wonderful group of professionals. The OVR staff was very welcoming and helpful. They taught me that social skills are very important, especially when dealing with people and their personal issues on a day-to-day basis. They also took the time to share their experiences and assist me in some things that I did not quite understand.

Overall, it was an exciting learning experience for me. I hope that the Office of Vocational Rehabilitation continues to offer this summer internship program so that other individuals could have the chance to gain information about putting individuals with disabilities back into the workforce and also to work with a great staff. Thank you.
