NMI represented in Aichi Expo
Saipan Mayor Juan B. Tudela recently led the Northern Marianas delegation to the 2005 World Exposition in Nagoya, Japan.
According to the Marianas Visitors Authority, the Commonwealth was personally invited by Nagoya Mayor Takehisa Matsubara to participate in the Aichi Expo 2005 with scheduled performances on Aug. 13-14, 2005.
Tudela traveled to the Expo with the Saipan Tipiyeew Dancers and MVA executives.
“The powerful performance by the 16 Carolinian and Chamorro dancers charmed many audiences with a Marianas show exhibiting cultural and traditional dances. The MVA, together with the CNMI performers, had a chance to distribute 400 Saipanda backpacks to other performers who were in attendance at the Expo Hall,” MVA reported. “This is a way to promote the Marianas as well as create stronger relationship and exchange cultures between the two countries.”
Tudela also expressed satisfaction with the event turnout.
“The cultural performance by our Saipan Tipiyeew Dancers during the two-day event was a success in promoting our islands culture. I would like to see this event continue in the future because it [enhances] our cultural and friendly relations with Japan,” said the mayor.
The performances by the CNMI delegation formed part of the Expo’s observance of Nagoya City Weekend, which featured events and performances to promote the upcoming Domatsuri Festival in Nagoya.
More than 260,000 people from all over the world visited the Aichi EXPO over this weekend.
The Aichi Expo 2005 began on March 25, 2005 and will run through Sept. 25, 2005. It features the culture, cuisine, and tradition of 127 countries, as well as the latest technology and innovations by companies. It is estimated to attract about 1.5 million people during its six-month duration.
