Students of the Saipan Southern High School were promised rewards through financial means and other forms of assistance by the Saipan Rotary Club if they maintain the trees they planted in their school yard last week.

Saipan Rotary Club president-elect Agnes McPhetres told the media yesterday during the weekly Rotary meeting at the Hyatt Regency Saipan that the students would be given rewards if they take good care of the plants and trees they had planted. She said the reward is also a means to teach the students to commit to protecting the environment, especially within their school.

The Saipan Rotary Club, led by current president James Whitt, gathered Saturday morning at the high school in Koblerville for the yearly tree-planting activity of the group. McPhetres said the activity was part of the club’s dedication and service to the community. She said the club holds the activity annually but last Saturday was the first time they asked students to assist them in the project.

Rotary Club vice-president Patrick Calvo coordinated the event and acquired assistance from the Junior Reserve Training Officers and the National Honor Society of the school.

The club began the tree planting at 8am and finished at 10am. Calvo said they were supposed to transfer to Koblerville Elementary School to repaint the restrooms but they will have to go back another day for the project.

Whitt said he was happy with the turnout of the activities, though he said he expected more members to participate in such a worthy community project.
