Bomb team to dispose of WWII ordnance
A U.S Navy explosive ordnance disposal team from Guam will detonate World War II live ordnance on Saipan this Friday, Aug. 26, 2005.
The Department of Public Safety, in coordination of Emergency Management Office and in conjunction with COMNAVMAR Guam, said the detonation will take place from 3pm to 5pm at the Laderan Laggun Cliff Line, which is about a mile north of the Marpi landfill.
The grid coordinates is 15 degrees 16.11 minutes’0.0865 seconds North and 145 degrees 49 minutes 0.3313 seconds East and 5,000 feet above sea level.
Due to the danger imposed by this operation, EMO is strongly advising the public, especially tour operators, commercial pilots, farmers, bikers, joggers and fishermen to stay at least one mile away from this area during the time and date indicated.
To ensure the public’s safety, the Marpi area will be closed off to all activities on Friday from 1pm to 5pm. The only area that will not be closed off will be Suicide Cliff as that will be the main viewing point for the detonation.
“General public access to Suicide Cliff is allowed only at the road leading up to the Far-East Broadcasting antenna into Suicide Cliff for viewing purposes. [DPS] will be setting up security posts to enforce and control traffic movement for safety purposes,” the EMO said. “Your cooperation and understanding in this urgent matter will be greatly appreciated.”
