While some of the top anglers from across the region are busy polishing their rods and performing safety checks on their vessels in advance of the Saipan Fisherman’s Association 21st Annual International Fishing Tournament, some of the youngest are following in their father’s footsteps.

In little more than a week from now, the next generation of fishermen will fix their bait and cast their lines in the 7th Annual International Children’s Fishing Derby on Sunday, Aug. 14.

First-timers are welcome as the contest is open to children between the ages of 7 to 12 years of age, but the time to register is now as only 22 participants will be able to vie for the title. The cost to enter the tournament is $5 and interested parents are can stop by the Marianas Visitors Authority office on Beach Road in San Jose to obtain an application or at JM & Associates in Fina Sisu.

The early anglers catch the worms, as entries will be accepted no later than next week Friday, Aug. 12. For more information about the fishing frenzy, contact the Marianas Visitors Authority by calling 664-3200/01 or JM & Associates at 234-3533.
